Set Design
I have been working in the theatre since 2001. I have worked with such theatres and theatre companies as Barabbas, Spraoi, Ex-Machina, Theatre Royal Waterford, Project Arts Centre, Theatre Space, Gaeity, Asylum, Graffiti and Bowler Hat Productions.
During that period I have also done a lot of festival work with the likes of the Kilkenny Arts Festival, Waterford Spraoi, Dublin Theatre festival, Cat Laughs, Night & Day (Galway), Patrick’s Day (Cork & Dublin), Belfast Arts Festival, Witness, Creamfields, P.S.I and M.C.D..
I have been working with Graffiti Theatre Company since 2003, started designing with them in 2004 and took over as Company manager in 2006. Though I had spent several years in set and float construction, they provided me with the opportunity to design. Most of the sets featured in this gallery were designed for Graffiti.
As a touring Theatre in Education Company all of these sets have to fit into the back of a transit, as well as having a get-in time of less than 45 minutes. I have really enjoyed the challenges that come with transforming a normal school environment in to a theatre space. Also, I am given the chance to design the whole look of a show, from poster to costumes, frequently with the input of the writer.
As I am still relatively new to the field, I have not settled on any single design ethos. This I see as a positive, and would be hoping to keep my style fluid and adaptive so as to best suit each project as I come to it. My training as a sculptor has proved very useful in maintaining a dynamic approach to design. Through this I gained not only a proficiency in the use of diverse materials, but a design aesthetic that I believe is borne out in my work.
