About Me
Thanks for visiting my site. From this page you will be able to view two different sides of my output. In one direction you can explore my set design, and in the other, my paintings. It is my sincere hope that if you have come to look at one, you might take the time to explore the other.
My work, like this site, is split down similar fault lines. I have found that the concurrent exploration of multiple, distinct art forms invigorates both. Like the act of viewing one's own work through a mirror, I return to each with fresh perspective and renewed purpose.
Having trained as a sculptor, in the Dun Laoighre Institute of Art and Design Technology (Diploma 2000), the step into set design seemed an obvious one. The inherent three dimensionality of theatre design shares many of the concerns that preoccupied me during my studies.
The occupation of space by the art form and the specific, visceral effect that has on the viewer, were main concerns of my thesis. This, coupled with a more definite interest in figurative sculpture, led to a keen awareness of the figure in space. So, bringing these issues into the area of theatrical design was a logical step. The actor as sculpture.
In the years since leaving college my own fine art work has moved away from sculpture. Most of my output has been in the form of paintings.
As you will see in my gallery, my interest in the figure in art has carried in to much of this work. That said, the inherent qualities of the medium have engaged me more and more as time has progressed.
With that in mind, I have tended to be somewhat experimental in my mixtures of media. As you will see in my gallery, the convergence of oil and water, as well as the use of metal as canvas, are just some of the techniques that I have been employing.
I have found that these experiments feed my enthusiasm for the work, and go hand in hand with more thematic developments.
